The construction of St Columba’s Church was ordered as part of the New Towns Act 1946 which saw Glenrothes itself built. Fife-based architectural firm Wheeler and Sproson were commissioned to design the new church building and St Columba’s Parish Church was completed for the community in 1961. Nevertheless, in recent years, the original design of the church building has become problematic as rainwater found its way into the sanctuary at several points. Building work had already been completed on the hall complex at St Columba’s but the issues with the sanctuary necessitated further work. Having secured funding for the building work, Property Convenor Eric Christie and the property committee pushed on with the repairs. The fruit of tireless planning and design work is the beautifully restored and repaired sanctuary that St Columba’s now boasts. St Columba’s now has a building which is fit for these modern times and one which the congregation can be proud of for years to come.
